The advent of the valley railroad meant the demise of the canal, but now a century later, the refurbished Ohio Canal Towpath Trail has opened as twenty mile hike and bike trail through the Cuyahoga Valley National recreation Area and the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad now makes regular stops in Peninsula.

Nestled in the heart of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area, the historic village of Peninsula is a shopping, dining and recreational mecca for Northeast Ohioans and visitors from around the world.

The village a national historic district, retains much of it's original character and though shops, restaurants and galleries now fill the former general stores and railroad depots, there is still a certain "majesty" in the Western Reserve architecture of it's buildings.

Much of Peninsula's heritage flows from the Ohio Canal. On July 4th, 1827, Peninsula held a great celebration to welcome the first canal boats traveling from Akron to Cleveland. The Ohio Canal introduced Peninsula to Eastern and world trade. The sandstone quarries and mills and cheese factories soon prospered. Peninsula has the flavor of Eastern seaports with its fourteen "honky tonk" taverns and five hotels, along with the boisterous canalers who frequented them.
